"He made an art student's day," Brill said of Brubeck and that magical afternoon. However, most people never knew that an icon of the jazz world had once bounced on its sheet-metal surface-until the notice of Brubeck's death was posted on UCSC's Facebook page this week and another alum recalled a faint memory of Brubeck paying a visit to campus. Paul Desmond had written Take Five partly as a gesture to the quartet’s drummer, Joe Morello, who wanted to show off his newfound confidence playing in 5/4 time. Today, the 12-foot-long, two-section sculpture sits in a small graveled yard in the shadow of redwoods, carefully preserved during the renovation of Porter A and B residence halls, according to James Blaine, college programs coordinator for Porter. However, he noted, the title had two other references: the 1981 name change from College Five to Porter College (thus taking away "Five") and the idea of taking a short break. Now a clockmaker/musician and living in Redwood Valley in Northern California, Brill said he named his sculpture "Take Five" partly as a tribute to Brubeck, whose music was an almost steady backbeat to Brill's college life. "He liked how they sprang up and down," Brill said. Brubeck dutifully cut the red ribbon and sat on the springy sculpture, which resembles crashing waves or chaise longue chairs, depending on a visitor's point of view. Somehow, said the Porter College art history major, his girlfriend persuaded Brubeck's manager to bring the legendary jazzman to campus for a sculpture dedication.īrubeck arrived to find Brill, five or six of his hallmates, a student photographer, and Brill's girlfriend holding a couple of bottles of bubbly. "He was just happy to help a college kid live out a piece of his dream."Īccording to Brill, it was "1984 or so" when his then-girlfriend heard Brubeck was in town for a concert at the Kuumbwa Jazz center. "He (Brubeck) was just a gracious, nice man," said Monte Brill, now 53 and the artist behind the sculpture, which was completed in 1982 and titled "Take Five"-a name shared with the Brubeck Quartet's famous instrumental. Not a single administrator or faculty member had been invited. Seven or eight students attended the event. Brubeck said its a good idea to shake things up a bit, and thats exactly what he did with the song 'Take Five.' 'Take Five' was the third track on the album Time Out, recorded in 1959. The occasion for the music legend's appearance was the dedication of a red-metal sculpture that sits outside what is known as the "bat caves" of Porter College's B Building residence hall. Show starts 7:30pm.On a sunny afternoon in the early '80s, jazz great Dave Brubeck slipped onto the UC Santa Cruz campus for a visit that would remain a nearly invisible slice of university history - until the pianist and composer's death this week at the age of 91. Designated a living legend by the American Library of Congress, Dave Brubeck, the man and his music lives on and for that, we have a better world.TICKET INFO:Dinner & Show ticket - dinner is served at 6pm, pre-show, and dessert in the interval (~8:25pm). It comprised virtuoso musicians, Paul Desmond on alto sax, Joe Morello on drums and African-American double bass player, Eugene Wright, whose inclusion often caused confrontational incidents for Dave with authorities. His classic quartet performed around the globe during the 1950’s and 60’s. More than a musician, Dave was a tireless advocate for human rights and racial integration. American pianist, Dave Brubeck, was one of the foremost exponents of cool jazz. Steve Todd, drums and Quinton Dunne, double bass, join Brendan Fitzgerald Quartet for this unique music event, presented in the tenth year following Dave's passing. This ensemble comprises outstanding musicians who have performed widely in Australia, Europe and Asia. Peter Raidel, accomplished alto saxophonist, plays the elegant musical lines of Paul Desmond, Brubeck’s creative ally and sometime adversary. He also channels Jimmy Lyons, a jazz radio presenter who helped launch Dave’s career. Brendan narrates Brubeck’s story at the piano together with a projected montage of images from his life and times. Together with "Blue Rondo a la Turk", these works are identified as seminal and revolutionary expressions of a new era in music. Brubeck was a musical innovator who incorporated. His Dave Brubeck Quartet scored the first-ever million-selling jazz LP, Time Out, in 1959, and his signature song 'Take Five' actually crossed over onto the Billboard pop charts in 1961. BRENDAN FITZGERALD QUARTET recreates the world of iconic jazz musician Dave Brubeck, his genius, his relationships, his humanity and popular acclaim. Without developers wanting to learn a new framework, there isn’t much point writing one.įlutter is easy to learn and use. One of Flutter’s many major plus points is that Google have actually listened to what the wider developer community want. Flutter, a unique approach to mobile app development Opinions vary, but of the two, we vastly prefer Flutter. Both have seen widespread adoption and inarguably, both are well supported and will be around for a long time. The result is two development toolsets which developers like (always a bonus). Really, React Native and Flutter rule the market at the moment.īoth are the product of evolution from earlier cross platform software - Facebook and Google have learnt from prior mistakes, in terms of application, feature sets, documentation and support. Use anything else and you can either unnecessarily spend a fortune or find you’ve adopted something weird and wonderful which will be unsupported and abandoned by developers in a year to eighteen months. Either hardware requirements will constrain you to use (expensive) Native development, or you should really look at either Facebook’s React Native or Google’s Flutter. If you’re writing a mobile app today, you have three choices. Xamarin is in big trouble and currently has a massively declining market - less than 11% of US apps use the Xamarin framework - and Ionic is not far ahead. Xamarin and Ionic have both been superceded - as part of a natural evolutionary process - by a couple of completely new development frameworks which have essentially changed the whole mobile app development landscape. This, along with Drifty’s Ionic, was essentially the start of cross platform development. Xamarin allowed developers to write one codebase which produced both an Android app and an iOS app. Roll back to 2010 and Microsoft released a development framework called Xamarin. The choice was very simple - and restrictive. Back in the early days, you either got an Android app or an iOS app for your money. Flutter, along with React Native, represent a new wave of app development tools. Whenever you have downloaded and introduced your new programming program, then you should restart your framework.
